How to use 了
Verb + Obj. + 了
了 may follow the verb or appear after its object, but the placements are not freely interchangeable in every context. Short verb-object expressions often sound complete with final 了, while a specified object or a longer event description can support 了 directly after the verb. Information structure and the surrounding conversation matter alongside the length of the object.
A final 了 can also signal that a situation now holds or has become relevant, so do not identify its meaning from position alone. Some sentences contain both a verbal 了 and a final 了 with related but distinct functions. Completion can also be relative to a future event; the particle is not simply a marker of past tense.
