How to use 了

Sentence pattern

Subj. + Verb Phrase + 了

A reply ending in 了 can imply that the suggested action has already happened or that the required situation already holds. The preceding question, reminder, or offer makes that relevance clear. The answer need not always include 已经 to communicate that there is no need to carry out the proposed action now.

This does not make 了 a direct substitute for “already” in every sentence. Its interpretation depends on the predicate and the conversational contrast. A reply about possession or knowledge may announce a current situation, while an action verb may report an accomplished step. Read the response together with what prompted it, rather than assigning the particle a fixed meaning in isolation.

Examples with pinyin and English

老板呢?

Lǎobǎn ne?

Where is the boss?

他走了。

Tā zǒu le.

He has (already) left.

孩子还在上大学吗?

Háizi hái zài shàng dàxué ma?

Are your kids still in college?

他们工作了。

Tāmen gōngzuò le.

They (already) work.

What to remember

  • Use the preceding turn to interpret the reply.
  • 已经 is not always necessary.
  • Different predicates convey different current consequences.
