Sentence pattern
有点儿 goes before an adjective to describe a modest degree. It commonly introduces something the speaker finds inconvenient or slightly beyond what they want: soup that is a little salty, work that is a bit difficult, or a box that is rather heavy.
Do not confuse this with 一点儿 before a noun, which names a small quantity. 有点儿咸 describes saltiness, while 一点儿水 means a little water. The 儿 ending is optional in many speakers’ usage, so 有点 is also common.
COMMON MISTAKESWhat to watch for
Avoid请给我有点儿水。
Use请给我一点儿水。
The request asks for a small quantity of water. Use 一点儿 before 水; 有点儿 belongs before a descriptive predicate here.
