How to use 而

Sentence pattern

Clause A,而 + Clause B; 不是 A,而是 B; 是 A,而不是 B

而 links related ideas while highlighting a difference between them. It is common in written and relatively formal speech, though familiar patterns also appear in conversation. The clauses should share a meaningful basis for comparison so the contrast is clear. Depending on the structure, English may render it as while, whereas, but, or but rather.

不是…而是… rejects one identification and supplies another, while 是…而不是… affirms the first and excludes the alternative. Keep the contrasted elements parallel: actions should be contrasted with actions, or identities with identities. In broader clause contrasts, 而 does not automatically carry the strong correction found in 而是. Interpret the complete frame rather than assigning one translation to 而 alone.
