How to use 为…而…

Sentence pattern

Subject + 为 + purpose / cause + 而 + action

为…而… places an action in the service of a purpose, person, or cause. The phrase after 为 identifies what motivates or gives direction to the action, and 而 introduces the action itself. The pattern can sound deliberate or emphatic, making it common in statements of commitment, effort, and ideals as well as ordinary explanations of purpose.

Keep the motivating phrase before 而 and choose an action that sensibly serves it. The construction does not automatically mean the goal has been achieved; it states what the effort is for. Pronounce 为 as wèi here. This distinguishes the preposition of purpose or benefit from wéi in the separate structure 以…为…, where something is taken as a role or standard.
