How to use 最
最 + Adj. (+ 了)
最 before an adjective marks the highest degree within a relevant set. The set might be a family, a collection of objects, or the alternatives already under discussion. Mandarin keeps the adjective unchanged, so the same basic arrangement covers meanings that English expresses with different endings or irregular words.
The comparison group need not always be spoken, but it must make sense in context. Some mental or psychological verbs also combine with 最, particularly when ranking preferences or understanding. 最喜欢 is a common way to identify a favorite. A final 了 can add emphasis in suitable sentences, but it is not required to create the superlative meaning itself.
