How to use 呢

Sentence pattern

⋯⋯呢?

呢 can give an existing question a more reflective or conversational quality. With a question word, it may suggest wondering about the answer. In an alternative question, it can follow each option as the speaker weighs possible choices. The underlying question is still supplied by the question word, 还是, or another question structure.

Affirmative-negative questions can also end in 呢, with an effect determined by the context and intonation. The particle does not guarantee politeness or softness: a speaker may sound curious, hesitant, persistent, or impatient. Do not use 呢 as though it were the same yes-no marker as 吗. Interpret the question form first, then consider what stance the particle adds.
