Sentence pattern

Subject + (正在 / 正 / 在 +) Verb Phrase + (呢)

Chinese can present an action as underway through several related patterns. 在 and 正在 appear before the action, while 呢 can reinforce an ongoing situation at the end of the clause. A verb phrase followed by 呢 may itself convey that someone is busy doing something, when the context supports that reading.

着 is another marker used with suitable verbs to describe a continuing activity or state. In a separable verb phrase it goes after the verbal part, before its object. These markers do not all have to appear together, and they are not interchangeable with every verb. Learn the common complete patterns rather than treating an ongoing sentence as a formula requiring every available marker.
