Sentence pattern

一边 + Verb 1 (,) 一边 + Verb 2

The repeated 一边 construction pairs two activities carried out at the same time. Each 一边 introduces an action phrase, and a shared subject normally performs both. It is useful for describing multitasking rather than simply saying that two separate events happened somewhere within the same broad period.

The actions should make sense as overlapping activities. General background circumstances or an event that happens while something else is underway may be better expressed with a time clause using 的时候. Conversational speech can shorten 一边 to 边. English may reverse the apparent main action when translating “while,” so preserve the simultaneous relationship rather than copying the order of an English rendering mechanically.
