Sentence pattern

Context,subject + 反而 + unexpected opposite result

反而 highlights a result that runs against the expected direction. An attempted improvement may worsen the situation, or a setback may prompt greater effort. The contrast is stronger than a simple difference between two facts: the earlier situation creates an expectation, and the later result reverses it. English often uses instead or on the contrary to make that reversal clear.

Place 反而 in the second clause before the predicate, normally after an explicit subject. It can follow a statement that something did not happen, with the next clause supplying what happened instead. Patterns with 不但 or 不仅 can emphasize the reversal further. Keep the expectation recoverable so the contrast feels justified.
