How to use 莫过于
Extreme quality / topic + 莫过于 + leading case
莫过于 identifies something as unsurpassed on the scale being discussed. The opening phrase commonly names a greatest pleasure, deepest sadness, strongest comfort, or other extreme, and the phrase after 莫过于 gives the case that fits it. This produces an emphatic evaluation in a literary or formal style. The scale can be unfavorable as readily as favorable.
Make the relevant quality clear before naming the leading case. The final phrase may be a noun or an action that embodies the evaluation. The construction often expresses the speaker's assessment rather than an independently verified ranking. Do not interpret every use as meaning best overall: what matters is which quality is said to have no stronger example.
