Sentence pattern

Subject + 非(要) + action + 不可; 非 + required person / action + 不可

非…不可 presents something as admitting no acceptable alternative. It can express determination, a practical requirement, or confidence that a consequence will occur. When 非要 appears without the ending, it often highlights someone's insistence, especially when others object. The force may sound admirable or stubborn depending on the situation and the speaker's attitude toward the action.

Place the action between 非 and 不可, adding 要 where the construction supports it. To emphasize that a particular person must perform the action, that person can follow 非 inside the focus. Predictive uses often warn of an unavoidable result under the stated conditions. Interpret the whole sentence to distinguish a deliberate intention from an external necessity or forecast.

What to remember

  • Use context to separate insistence, necessity, and prediction.
