How to use 不太

Sentence pattern

不太 + Adj.

不太 before an adjective weakens a positive degree rather than asserting its strongest opposite. It often corresponds to “not very” or “not particularly.” This makes it useful for measured descriptions and tactful evaluations. The negative pattern usually stands without the final 了 commonly found in an affirmative 太 adjective exclamation.

Selected verbs also fit, especially those involving understanding, liking, wanting, or ability. In these cases, English may use “not really” rather than “not very.” Do not assume that every action verb takes the pattern equally naturally. The degree being limited should make sense in context. This is also different from saying that a quality exceeds a limit; 不太 often softens the evaluation.
