How to use 着
Verb + 着 + verb + 着,(就) + new development (+ 了)
Repeating a verb with 着 portrays an activity continuing for a while before something changes. The speaker follows the action as it unfolds, then comments on a discovery, interruption, or unexpected result. The repetition does not necessarily count separate completed actions; it creates the sense of doing something and continuing to do it until a new situation emerges.
Use the same verb in both parts and put the development in the following clause. 就 often marks that transition, while 了 may identify the resulting change. Here 着 is the neutral-tone particle zhe, which differs from the pronounced complement 着 in expressions about successfully reaching an action's goal.
