Sentence pattern

Modifier + 的 + Noun / Verb or Adjective + 得 + Complement / Manner phrase + 地 + Verb

The neutral-sounding syllable de has three common written forms with different grammatical jobs. 的 links a modifier to a following noun, including possessors and descriptions. 地 connects a manner expression to a following action. 得 introduces a complement after a verb or adjective, supplying further information about its degree, manner, or result.

Position is a helpful first clue, but understanding what each phrase modifies is more reliable than memorizing “before” and “after” alone. A manner phrase before an action and a complement after it may express related ideas with different structures. These written distinctions also do not cover every possible pronunciation or use of the three characters. Learn the construction along with the character.
