How to use 宁可
宁可 + chosen alternative,也不 + rejected alternative; 宁可 + accepted cost,也要 + determined action
宁可 expresses a deliberate preference, often when making a choice involves a drawback. In 宁可…也不, the speaker accepts the first alternative rather than take the second. The contrast can reveal a principle, priority, or strong personal judgment. Although difficult choices are common, the construction does not require both options to be equally undesirable.
A different arrangement uses 宁可…也要: the first clause names a cost or sacrifice, while the second states what the speaker remains determined to do. Keep those relationships clear because the same initial word can introduce either a preferred option or a concession. The verbs and negatives in the second clause establish the intended comparison.
