Sentence pattern

除非 + exception,否则 / 不然 + result; 除非 + condition,才 + enabled result

除非 identifies an exception to the situation described in the rest of the sentence. With a negative main statement, it often corresponds to unless: the main outcome holds except under the named condition. The exception can come first or follow the main clause. This helps distinguish a limited possibility from a general prediction about what will happen.

When 除非 starts the sentence, 否则 or 不然 can introduce what happens if the exception does not apply. A related pattern uses 才 to state what becomes possible under that exceptional condition. Pay attention to the second clause's polarity: these structures describe the relationship differently, so merely swapping the linking word can change the intended meaning.

What to remember

  • Treat the 除非 clause as the exceptional condition.
  • Use 否则 for what follows without that exception.
  • Use 才 for the result enabled by the condition.
