How to use 而已

Sentence pattern

Limited statement + 而已

而已 limits the scope or importance of the statement immediately before it. The speaker presents something as merely that much, with no greater meaning implied. It can downplay a gift, explain a modest purpose, or challenge an exaggerated reaction. The English wording depends on tone, ranging from only to nothing more than that or that's all.

Place 而已 after the noun phrase or longer proposition being limited. 只, 只是, or 仅仅 can reinforce the restriction earlier in the sentence, but they are not compulsory. Because minimizing something can sound dismissive, the social effect depends on whose concern or effort the speaker is treating as small.
