How to use 所谓
所谓 + (的) + noun phrase
所谓 introduces a label, term, or concept that people use. It can neutrally identify what is called something, or it can distance the speaker from a claim they doubt. Sarcasm is therefore possible but not compulsory. The surrounding evaluation, quotation marks, and tone help determine whether the speaker is defining a term, discussing it, or questioning its legitimacy.
Place 所谓 before the noun phrase being labeled, with 的 often appearing between them. The resulting phrase can occupy the normal role of a noun phrase in the sentence. Avoid importing the consistently skeptical tone that English so-called sometimes suggests; Chinese 所谓 may simply organize a discussion around a name or familiar idea.
