How to use 一向
Subject + 一向 + Habit / Attitude / Characteristic
一向 presents a habit, attitude, or characteristic as established over a long period. It is useful when describing someone’s usual conduct or comparing an unexpected incident with their known pattern. Put it before the predicate, which may describe an action, preference, or identity. The claim concerns consistency across relevant occasions rather than a single unbroken action.
This distinguishes 一向 from 一直, which commonly describes continuity of an activity, process, or state across a span of time. 一向 does not by itself mean since the absolute beginning of someone’s life. The relevant history comes from context. Negative predicates can state a longstanding dislike or refusal, provided the sentence describes an established tendency.
