How to use 一直;一向
一直 + continuing action / state; 一向 + established habit / characteristic
一直 can describe an action or state continuing through a relevant stretch of time. It can look back from a starting point, describe the present, or extend a commitment into the future. It also appears in directional instructions about continuing straight ahead. 一向 instead summarizes a longstanding habit, attitude, or characteristic that the speaker treats as typical.
Choose 一直 when the continuity of a particular activity or state is central, and 一向 when consistency across occasions is the point. The latter does not require a negative opinion; a generous or reliable habit is equally possible. A time span can be understood rather than explicitly stated, so the presence of a starting date is not the sole grammatical test.
