How to use 在……上/下/里
在 + Place + 上 / 下 / 里 / 旁边
在 introduces a location, but an ordinary object noun often needs a position word to specify the relationship. 上, 下, 里, and other locality expressions follow the reference noun to say whether something is on, under, inside, or beside it. The complete location phrase can then state where a subject is or an action happens.
Named cities, countries, and many familiar place words can follow 在 without an added locality word. Avoid choosing solely by an imagined division between “big” and “small” places; the noun's normal usage also matters. Some occasions and abstract settings have established location expressions of their own. Learn the complete phrase and identify which physical or conventional relationship the position word contributes.
