How to use 要不

Sentence pattern

Reason / Situation,要不 + Suggestion + 吧

要不 can introduce a conversational suggestion that seeks the listener's acceptance. The reason or situation may be explained first, followed by 要不 and the proposed action. The suggestion can also come first when the explanation follows. A final 吧 often reinforces the proposal's tentative or cooperative tone.

This is different from 要不 introducing an unwanted consequence meaning “otherwise.” In that use, an earlier clause recommends an action and the following clause explains what may happen without it. The fuller 要不然 can serve that consequence meaning too. Read the relationship between the clauses to determine whether the speaker is proposing an option or warning about the result of not following one.
