How to use 还是

Sentence pattern

还是 + Verb

还是 before an action can present it as the preferable choice after alternatives have been considered. The speaker may be revising a plan or recommending the more sensible option in the circumstances. A subject can precede 还是, while an unstated subject is possible when the participants are already clear.

Final 吧 often makes the decision or recommendation sound like a suggestion. Negative recommendations can use 别 or 不要 after 还是 to advise against an action. This differs from 还是 meaning “or” between alternatives in a direct choice question, and from its persistence meaning in other contexts. Identify whether the sentence requests a choice or announces the option the speaker now considers better.
