How to use 还好…不然…
还好 + Lucky Incident ,不然 + Bad Outcome
还好 can introduce a circumstance the speaker is relieved about. It presents an event, decision, or condition as fortunate because it prevents a problem. The fortunate part can be something that happened or something that did not happen. This use means more than simply describing a thing as reasonably good.
不然 can introduce the undesirable alternative that would have followed without that fortunate circumstance. Keep the actual situation and the hypothetical outcome distinct when interpreting the sentence. Context determines whether the avoided problem belongs to the past or remains a present possibility. The second clause is optional when the danger is obvious, but it makes the reason for the speaker’s relief explicit.
