How to use 等于

Sentence pattern

A + (就) + 等于 + B

等于 expresses equality in mathematics and extends to practical equivalence in everyday language. The speaker treats one action or situation as effectively the same as another in its consequences or significance. This can sharpen a warning, summarize an implication, or explain why an apparently small choice matters. The equality is often rhetorical rather than a claim that every detail is identical.

Place the first action or situation before 等于 and the equivalent interpretation after it. 就 can strengthen the connection. Both sides may be action phrases rather than nouns. Although negative or unintended consequences are common, 等于 does not require a bad result; the central idea is equivalence on the dimension relevant to the discussion.
