How to use 直到…才

Sentence pattern

直到 + Time / Event ,Subj. + 才 ⋯⋯

直到 emphasizes a boundary reached after a stretch of time. With 才 in an affirmative main clause, it highlights that an event happened only at that point, often later than expected. The boundary can be a clock time, an age, or an event. The subject may appear before the 直到 phrase or in the main clause.

With 都 and a negative predicate, 直到 says the negative situation persisted through the stated boundary. This does not necessarily establish that the opposite happened afterward. Check the wording rather than assuming every negative sentence means the event eventually occurred. Both constructions focus attention on how long the situation lasted before reaching the specified point.
