Sentence pattern

Subject + 总算 / 终于 + predicate

总算 and 终于 both mark the arrival of a result after a process, delay, or difficulty. They direct attention to the endpoint and suggest that something preceded it rather than presenting the event in isolation. Either may express satisfaction or relief, depending on what happens. The elapsed effort or waiting time can be stated explicitly or understood from the conversation.

总算 often sounds more conversational and can foreground the speaker's relief that the result was achieved. 终于 is common in both speech and writing and readily supports a neutral narrative endpoint. These are tendencies rather than an absolute emotional-versus-objective split. Choose the word that fits the sentence's tone and the surrounding account of how the outcome was reached.

Examples with pinyin and English

Nǐ zǒngsuàn lái le!

You finally came!

我终于懂了。

Wǒ zhōngyú dǒng le.

I finally understood it.

雨总算停了。

Yǔ zǒngsuàn tíng le.

The rain finally stopped.

我终于找到你了!

Wǒ zhōngyú zhǎodào nǐ le!

I finally found you!

What to remember

  • Connect the result to an earlier process or wait.
  • Use 总算 naturally for a relieved conversational reaction.
  • Do not assume 终于 is always emotionally neutral.
