Sentence pattern

对 / 对于 + object,comment; subject + 对 + person + treatment

对 and 对于 overlap when introducing the object or matter an opinion, understanding, or discussion concerns. 对于 often has a more deliberate or formal sound and can foreground that reference point. This overlap does not mean every 对 can be expanded to 对于. The shorter word participates in more constructions and combines closely with many familiar predicates.

Use 对 in ordinary expressions about treatment or directed behavior, and recognize its verbal meanings such as facing or matching. Forms with 对着 or 对上 belong to those additional uses. Word order and collocation also affect naturalness. Rather than relying on one broad interchangeability rule, learn 对于 as a way to frame a relevant object and 对 through its wider set of patterns.
