How to use 吧

Sentence pattern

Command + 吧

Adding 吧 to an action phrase can make it sound like a suggestion or a softened request. When the subject includes the speaker and listener, English often uses “let's” for the same purpose. The particle belongs at the end of the suggestion, after the action and any objects or other necessary information.

The strength still depends on context and delivery. A request for another person to act can be encouraging, practical, or fairly direct even with 吧. A rising tone may instead seek agreement about a plan. Treat the particle as a guide to the speaker's stance rather than a word with one fixed English translation.

Examples with pinyin and English

Wǒmen zǒu ba.

Let's go.

你说吧。

Nǐ shuō ba.

快点吃吧。

Kuài diǎn chī ba.

Hurry up and eat.

给我两个吧。

Gěi wǒ liǎng gè ba.

Give me two.

What to remember

  • Place 吧 after the complete suggestion.
  • 我们 often introduces a shared proposal.
  • Tone affects how tentative the request sounds.
