02 / UNDERSTANDHow it works
Sentence pattern
The basic use of 和 joins nouns or noun phrases: tea and water, a colleague and a friend, or your notebook and mine. The combined phrase can act as the subject or the object of a sentence. You do not need to repeat the verb when both things belong in the same role.
English “and” connects many kinds of material, but 和 is not a universal replacement for every “and” you encounter. For beginner sentences, use it to join people and things. When you want to describe two full actions, separate sentences or a more specific connection such as “then” may express your meaning more clearly.
If the sentence says that both joined people do something, 都 can make that shared meaning explicit. “My classmate and I both…” follows the order 我 + 和 + classmate + 都 + action. You can also use 和 inside a longer object phrase after a verb such as 买 or 带.
COMMON MISTAKESWhat to watch for
Avoid我和喜欢花茶。
Use我和朋友都喜欢花茶。
和 needs a second noun phrase in this pattern. To say “My friend and I both like flower tea,” put 朋友 after 和, then add 都 and the shared action.
