How to use 白
白 + Verb
白 before a verb can say that an action failed to produce its intended benefit. The effort, money, or time was spent, but the expected result did not follow. This is useful when an arrangement becomes unnecessary or when work turns out to have been wasted. Context establishes what the action was supposed to achieve.
The same preverbal 白 can also mean that something is obtained or done without payment. That reading concerns cost rather than failure, so the surrounding nouns and circumstances matter. 白白 is a related emphatic form for wasted effort. Do not add 地 mechanically after the single-syllable 白 in these common patterns; it normally attaches directly before the verb.
Examples with pinyin and English

他不回来吃饭了?!我这些菜白做了。
He's not coming back to eat?! I made all this food for nothing.
