How to use 曾经

Sentence pattern

Subject + 曾经 + Predicate (+ 过)

曾经 places a situation in an earlier period of experience. It often recalls something that once happened or used to be true, sometimes with an implied contrast to the present. Put it before the predicate. With action verbs, experiential 过 is common, helping present the event as part of someone’s past experience.

States and identity statements can use 曾经 without 过 when their grammar calls for a different arrangement. The word does not count occurrences, so English “once” here means at an earlier time rather than exactly one time. For a negative meaning such as never having had an experience, a separate pattern such as 从来没 is usually more appropriate than mechanically adding 不 to 曾经.
