How to use 即使…也

Sentence pattern

即使 + hypothetical condition,subject + 也 + unchanged result

即使 introduces a condition that might normally affect a decision or outcome. The second clause says that the stated result still holds despite it. This is a concessive conditional: the speaker temporarily allows the possibility without letting it change the conclusion. It does not claim that the first condition is impossible or that the second clause disproves it.

Place 也 before the predicate in the result clause, after its subject when stated. The first clause can describe an unwelcome obstacle or any other relevant possibility. Unlike a plain if sentence, the construction emphasizes that this condition makes no decisive difference. The intended concession should therefore be clear from the relationship between the two clauses.

What to remember

  • Use 即使 for an imagined concession.
  • Put 也 with the unchanged result.
  • Do not interpret the second clause as denying the condition.
