How to use 偏偏
Context,subject + 偏偏 + contrary event / behavior
偏偏 highlights a mismatch between reality and what someone wants, expects, or considers appropriate. It can describe an inconvenient coincidence, a person insisting on the opposite course, or one conspicuous exception while everyone else behaves differently. The expression often carries frustration or dissatisfaction, making the speaker's attitude more prominent than in a neutral report of surprise.
Establish the relevant expectation in the earlier clause or surrounding conversation, then place 偏偏 with the contrary event. It may precede the subject for emphasis or follow it before the predicate. Do not assume the person is always acting deliberately: an unfortunate timing coincidence can produce the same sense that events have perversely worked against the desired outcome.
Examples with pinyin and English
我刚洗完车,偏偏就下雨了。
I had just washed the car when, of all times, it started raining.
偏偏 highlights an inconvenient coincidence.
大家都劝他休息,他偏偏还要工作。
Everyone urged him to rest, but he insisted on working.
The contrary behavior is deliberate here.
别人都带了伞,偏偏我忘了。
Everyone else brought an umbrella, but I alone had forgotten.
偏偏 singles out a frustrating exception.
What to remember
- Make the frustrated expectation clear.
- Use 偏偏 for accidental or deliberate contrary outcomes.
- Recognize the speaker's dissatisfaction rather than just surprise.
