How to use 恐怕
(Subject +) 恐怕 + Clause / Predicate
恐怕 introduces an assessment that may be unwelcome, concerning, or inconvenient. It can soften bad news or present a prediction cautiously, rather than describing literal fear. The following clause names what the speaker believes may be the case. A preceding explanation can supply the evidence that makes the assessment reasonable.
The word can introduce the clause before its subject or follow a stated topic or subject before the predicate. Modals such as 会, 要, or 得 often help describe the anticipated situation. 恐怕 does not automatically mean the speaker is certain, and it should not be used as a direct substitute for being frightened of a concrete thing. Read it as a stance toward the proposition.
