Sentence pattern

Subj. + 差点 + Predicate

差点 before a predicate says that the described outcome came close to happening. In the straightforward affirmative pattern, it did not actually occur. The expression frequently concerns unwelcome possibilities or narrow escapes, making it useful when the speaker wants to emphasize how close the situation came to a different result.

差点儿 is a common variant with the same basic function. 就 and final 了 may add emphasis in suitable sentences, but neither is required for the core near-miss meaning. Favorable outcomes can also appear in context, so the construction is not restricted to bad events. Forms containing 没 have additional interpretation issues and should not be reduced to a mechanical rule about reversing every following predicate.
