How to use 所有

Sentence pattern

所有 (+ 的) + Noun

所有 refers to the complete set of things or people identified by the following noun phrase. 的 may appear between 所有 and the noun, depending on the expression. The set can be defined by ownership, a location, or another modifier; it does not have to include everything of that kind in the world.

When a 所有 phrase is the subject, 都 commonly precedes the predicate to distribute the claim across its members. Negation needs careful attention. 不是所有…都… denies that the statement holds for every member, leaving room for exceptions. 所有…都不… instead applies the negative to the whole set. These different positions can change the meaning substantially.
