How to use 得不得了

Sentence pattern

Adj. + 得不得了

得不得了 intensifies a description to an extreme degree. Put it after the adjective or descriptive predicate, with 得 linking the quality to the degree complement. It can express intense cold, anger, busyness, happiness, or another state. The phrase is expressive and often conveys the speaker’s strong personal reaction to the situation.

Although 不得了 on its own can suggest something serious or alarming, the degree-complement pattern is not restricted to bad outcomes. A positive adjective remains positive; the expression increases its force. Do not interpret the internal 不 as negating the adjective. Also keep this form separate from 不得不 before a verb, which expresses having no choice but to act.
