Xiao Jie is a recent high school graduate. Since childhood, he’s loved music and dreams of becoming a musician. But his parents insist he go to university and study something “useful,” like economics or computer science.
At first, Xiao Jie tried to persuade them. He said, “I want to follow my dream. I’m ready to face challenges.” But his father got angry: “You think you can make a living from music? That’s naïve!” His mother was gentler, but still didn’t support him: “We’re just worried about your future. What if you fail?”
The conflict grew worse, and the home became tense. One day, Xiao Jie decided to write a letter, sincerely explaining his thoughts. In it, he said: “I understand your concerns, but I hope you can hear me out. I’m not playing around—I really want to make music my career. I’ve found an internship and I’m willing to try university while developing my interests.”
His mother cried after reading the letter. She began to reconsider. His father, though still unsure, saw that Xiao Jie was willing to compromise and finally calmed down. The three of them sat down and truly talked for the first time.
“If you’re really serious, we’ll support you,” his father said at last.
Xiao Jie was deeply moved. He decided to attend university while continuing to study music in his free time. His friends always encouraged him: “Dreams are important, but communication is just as important.”
After that, Xiao Jie worked even harder. His grades were good, and his music improved. His parents slowly realized: children don’t always have to follow the path parents plan. In a family, respect and understanding matter most.
