How to practise Chinese grammar after reading a lesson

Website

Reading an explanation and choosing a sentence test different things. Use the grammar reference to understand a pattern, then open grammar practice to try it with feedback.

Open Study and choose Grammar practice

Find a pattern you need

Browse the grammar reference by topic, search or level. Choose one question from your reading, such as where to put 的 when saying whose book it is. Read the explanation and compare the complete examples before starting an exercise.

这是我的书。

Zhè shì wǒ de shū.

This is my book.

In this sentence, 我的 describes whose book it is. Try changing 我 to 你 and say the new meaning. You can work through that change on paper before opening the interactive practice.

Check the vocabulary before the exercise

Open Study → Grammar practice and select the matching topic. The practice catalogue and the public reference serve different purposes: some topics have an article without an exercise set.

When the exercise needs vocabulary that is still unfamiliar, Laowai can ask you to practise those words first. Use Practise vocabulary or Add vocabulary to My lists, then return and choose Check readiness.

This keeps a grammar question useful. If every word is unfamiliar, guessing the missing word tells you little about whether you understand the pattern.

Use the exercise format deliberately

Available exercise formats include finding a grammar form, choosing a structure or sentence, completing a blank, repairing a sentence and putting words in order. Follow the prompt: correcting a sentence may require the complete sentence and its punctuation.

  1. Read the whole prompt before looking at choices.
  2. Build or type the answer, then choose Check answer.
  3. Compare the correction with the explanation. Say which part of the sentence changed.
  4. Use a hint if needed, then try the pattern in a fresh sentence.

Grammar results and vocabulary results have their own histories. Knowing the words in 我的书 does not by itself show that you can place 的 correctly.

Resume and apply the pattern

Use Save and leave to pause grammar practice. The saved session keeps checked answers; unanswered exercises restart. If the curriculum has changed and the old session cannot resume, end that session and start the updated lesson. Previously saved answers remain in the history.

After practising, return to a short reading and find the same structure. For possession, compare 我的朋友 with 我的书: the noun changes, but the relationship stays the same. Then write one sentence about something you own.

Use the starter lesson groups when you want a suggested sequence. For a specific problem in a book or homework task, search the reference directly.
